«Art is a bridge between peoples. When we tell the story of the Holocaust on the Azerbaijani stage, we speak about the pain of all humanity.»
Ilgar Safat is a theater and film director, screenwriter, writer, and one of the most distinctive creative voices in contemporary Azerbaijani culture. Born in 1972 in Baku, he has built a multifaceted career that spans stage, screen, and the written page.
Safat became the first director to bring the subject of the Holocaust to the Azerbaijani stage. His play “In Search of Meaning,” based on the works of Viktor Frankl, became a landmark event in the cultural life of the country — a production that spoke about the tragedy of the Holocaust through the prism of universal human values and the quest for meaning in the face of suffering.
In cinema, Ilgar Safat gained international recognition with his film “The Plot,” which was nominated as Azerbaijan’s entry for the Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010. This achievement placed Azerbaijani cinema on the map of world film culture.
His film “Dogma Torpaq” further confirmed his reputation as a director who addresses complex social and historical themes with artistic depth and emotional honesty.
Beyond directing, Ilgar Safat is also a prose writer and poet, whose literary works explore themes of identity, memory, and the human condition. He is the founder and artistic director of the Safat Theater, which has become a platform for experimental and socially engaged theatrical art in Azerbaijan.
