«Theater is a place where people of different nationalities and faiths unite through art. Baku has always been such a city.»
Alexander Sharovsky is a legendary figure of Baku theater, a director whose name has become synonymous with the Russian Drama Theater in Azerbaijan. Born in 1948, he came to the stage through a twist of fate — a football injury ended his athletic career and opened the door to the world of art.
His theatrical journey began in 1967 at the Young Spectator’s Theater (TYuZ), and since 1974 his life has been inseparably connected with the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater named after Samad Vurgun. In 1993, he became its chief director — a position he holds to this day, having made the theater one of the most significant cultural institutions in the country.
Sharovsky is also known for his role in the beloved film “Don’t Be Afraid, I’m With You!” — a picture that became a cultural phenomenon and a symbol of multinational Baku. This film, like his entire career, reflects the idea that art knows no ethnic or religious boundaries.
For his contributions to the development of Azerbaijani culture, Alexander Sharovsky was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Azerbaijan, as well as the orders Shokhrat (Glory) and Sharaf (Honor) — the country’s highest state distinctions in the field of culture and public service.
