Law enforcement agencies in Bolivia are actively working to locate the banknotes that were on board a military plane that crashed on February 27 near La Paz International Airport. This tragic incident resulted in the death of 24 people.
The C-130 Hercules aircraft was transporting new banknotes worth a total of 425 million bolivianos, equivalent to approximately 62 million US dollars. The crash caused millions of banknotes to scatter across the area, prompting tens of thousands of people to rush out in search.
Preliminary estimates suggest that about a third of the 17 million banknotes on board were stolen. In response to the situation, the country’s Central Bank has annulled entire series of these banknotes to prevent their use by looters, which has led to dissatisfaction among business owners who now have to carefully check the money they receive.
To seize and destroy the annulled banknotes, the police conducted searches in 20 homes located near the crash site. During the operation, around 50 people were detained on suspicion of involvement in looting. However, it is challenging to arrest everyone who may have been involved in this incident.
